Team Stellar - State Champions!

Team Stellar Advance to the World Finals

Take seven bold and creative students, six months and one stellar problem, and what do you get? Odyssey of the Mind State Champions!

BCMS students Matthew B., David F., Jamie C., Avni M., Ella R., Mina B., and Katherine S. won first place at the Odyssey of the Mind State Championships. The team presented their long term solution to "A Stellar Hangout" on Saturday, April 14, at Ewing High School and then competed in spontaneous problem solving and captured the top scores in both categories. As state champions, the team will be representing New Jersey at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Iowa at Iowa State University May 23-26. This is BCMS's first team to advance to World Finals. This year's state tournament featured not only the top teams from around the state, but also the founder of Odyssey of the Mind, Dr. Sam Micklus. New Jersey's Odyssey of the Mind celebrates its 40th anniversary with this year's competition.

In March, BCMS hosted the Skyland Odyssey of the Mind Regional Tournament. Over ninety teams in four divisions (Primary, Gr 3-5, Gr 6-8, and Gr 9-12) competed on March 17 at Branchburg Central Middle School. BCMS's Stellar Hangout Team qualified for the state finals with a second place medal for their outstanding literary hangout performance. BCMS's Team Vehicle scored a third place medal at regions with their musically inspired vehicle solution.

So now, are you wondering what Odyssey of the Mind is? It's a creativity competition where a team of five to seven students build, write, create, practice and perform their own solution in eight minutes to a long-term problem. The team also competes with a spontaneous problem that they don't know until the day of competition. Long term problems change every year, and fall into five basic categories, Vehicle, Technical, Classics, Balsa and Performance. Spontaneous problem also change every year, but fall into three categories: Verbal, Verbal/Hands-on, and Hands-on.  More information can be found on the Odyssey of the Mind website.

Thank you to ALL of the BCMS family who have supported the Odyssey of the Mind teams! We really appreciate your support.
